Three Years or Bust

In one of the more recent Newsweek editions, the cover article focused on whether four years of college are necessary. The article discussed the cost ramifications of spending four years in school plus the potential room and board monies. It made some very good points that many students may benefit financially from a three year process. They would, in essence, go to school year round.

First, let me say that I agree and acknowledge that this idea may prove less expensive and a necessary decision for some students. Second, I also acknowledge that the only reason we have the schedule we presently have is a throw back to an agrarian society when children were needed to work the farms. I also understand it would utilize facilities that many times go empty during the summer. Finally, I also understand that many colleges use this concept as a marketing tool and heavily push "accelerated" degrees.....sort of like name that tune.....I can graduate you in six terms!

Having said all that, I would recommend against it, if possible, for two reasons. First, as an educator for the past thirty four years I do not believe most students can master the intellectual development and critical thinking skills in this time frame. It does take a while for ideas to "percolate" before they may make sense or one finds they have developed the ability to analyze, synthesize and articulate multiple concepts.

Secondly, I went my undergraduate program in three years (round the clock and summer) and having done it, regret it. If one is fortunate enough to experience college there is much to be learned in AND out of the classroom. The education is not just about what you learn from the teacher but how you develop as a person. Much of this comes from the interaction with ones fellow students. This could be through clubs, sports or even, God forbid, over and adult beverage. I can honestly say that I missed too much of the college experience due to the speed I went through school. I was lucky and could have gone through more slowly as I did not have to pay. I was in a rush. Sometimes when you move too fast you miss the important things like life long friendships and camaraderie.

Heck, if you can afford it, take a semester off and be a ski bum or life guard on a cruise ship. Life will come at you fast enough!
