In Remembrance of Christopher Simpson

cs

Oh I Have Slipped
The Surly Bonds of Earth...
Put Out My Hand
And Touched the Face of God

If you are one of the thousands who had the privilege of attending media or crisis training given by SimpsonScarborough’s founder, Christopher Simpson, you will recognize this John Gillespie Magee, Jr. poem that was used by President Ronald Reagan to describe the space shuttle Challenger tragedy in 1986. It was a quote Christopher used to describe the power of a “pithy quote” when talking to the media and to tell of his experience as a national reporter.

Today, these same words apply when paying tribute to a wonderful man. James Christopher Simpson passed away on February 24, 2008, in Williamsburg, Virginia, after a heroic battle against cancer. He is survived by his wife Millie, son David, daughter Sara, and his mother, many friends, and the SimpsonScarborough family.

Christopher was a man whose intelligence and steel nerves transformed the field of communications in higher education. This resolve paralleled his sense of humor and deep laughter that he often shared with those around him. He was a caring mentor and a generous friend. He, and his voluminous emails, will be missed every day by those of us who were lucky enough to know and love him.

His greatest gift to our SimpsonScarborough family was the framework and vision for our company. I promised him that I will build upon our firm’s short but tremendously successful history to grow the company as we had envisioned. Accomplishing the plan already set in motion and continuing to blast past milestones is the ultimate tribute we can provide.

Please feel free to share your memories of Christopher as a comment on our blog and we will share them with Millie and the Simpson family.

Thank you,

Elizabeth Scarborough
