SimpsonScarborough Hires Former University President and Former Washington Post Columnist

Washington, DC: SimpsonScarborough, the premiere provider of strategic communications in the higher education field, announced today the hiring of former university president Jerry Israel as senior consulting strategist and former Washington Post journalist Bob Levey as senior media strategist.

SimpsonScarborough, with offices in New York, Virginia, Washington, DC, Ohio and Colorado, has provided strategic marketing, communications and media assistance to more than 1,000 colleges, universities, higher education systems and government agencies in the United States, North America and Europe. Clients include the University of California-Berkeley, University of Colorado, Carnegie Mellon University, Swarthmore, Baylor University, the SUNY System, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Energy and the American Council on Education.

Jerry Israel, PhD, is the former president of the University of Indianapolis and Morningside College.  While president of the University of Indianapolis, he led the university’s first comprehensive strategic planning and fundraising campaign efforts, which culminated in eight-figure grants from the Lilly Endowment and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the university’s $100 million fundraising effort. He will work with college and university presidents and boards on strategic planning, crisis communications, fund raising, staff development and a variety of other services.

Bob Levey, senior media strategist, is a prize winning journalist who spent thirty-six years writing for The Washington Post while also having a diversified career in television and radio and as a college professor. His forte was “Bob Levey’s Washington” column which detailed all aspects of life in the nation’s capital through his daily column, which ran for 23 years. He has an extensive career in the electronic media and is a prolific writer and speaker, along with teaching at an array of colleges and universities. He currently holds the Hardin Chair of Excellence in the Department of Journalism at the University of Memphis.

Levey will work principally on media training, media relations and crisis communications, joining the team led by CEO Christopher Simpson, a former political reporter for The Washington Times and senior communications officer for the University of South Carolina, University of Oregon, and Indiana University. Other media/crisis team members include Loretta Rogers Cooper, former ABC TV reporter who covered the White House, Congress and national affairs; Doris McMillon, who has held senior positions at NBC News, WABC-TV, Fox Television, and WJLA-TV in Washington, DC; Teresa Valerio Parrot, former assistant board secretary at the University of Colorado.
